Overview

The Devices Online card provides a snapshot of your active Scout devices, showing how many are currently connected to the secure network. It presents the information as a simple ratio such as 2 / 7, where the first number represents active devices and the second represents total registered devices.

This card offers immediate awareness of connectivity across your routers and peers.

How It Works

Scout continuously monitors each device’s connectivity status using heartbeat signals and VPN tunnel health checks.

When a device is connected and communicating normally, it appears as online. If a router or peer stops sending updates within a defined timeout period, it is automatically marked offline.

The count includes both:

  • Routers: physical Scout units deployed at homes, shops, or offices
  • Peers: individual endpoints such as laptops, phones, or tablets connected directly to the VPN

The card updates automatically in real time as devices connect or disconnect.

Why It Matters

This metric represents your organization’s operational visibility. By monitoring which devices are online, administrators can quickly identify potential connectivity issues or unmonitored systems.

Consistent connectivity ensures:

  • All users remain protected under Scout’s security and monitoring
  • Traffic is properly routed through the VPN and inspected
  • Alerts, logs, and telemetry are continuously collected
  • No device falls outside of managed coverage

A sudden drop in online devices could indicate power loss, local network issues, or VPN configuration problems that require attention.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use this card as part of your daily operational check to confirm all sites and peers are connected.
  • Investigate any long-term offline devices to verify whether they are still in use.
  • Compare with other metrics such as Connectivity under Infrastructure for deeper analysis.
  • Review patterns over time to understand normal activity cycles across your environment.

The Devices Online card updates automatically and reflects the most recent connectivity data from all registered Scout routers and peers.
