Level 1 – Basic Filtering

Learn how to start using Scout’s DNS filtering to block unsafe and unwanted content

Level 1 — Foundation

Overview

At this level, administrators establish their first layer of defense by using Blackhole’s built-in DNS filtering. This feature operates automatically from the moment a router connects to the Scout network, blocking known malicious, deceptive, and inappropriate domains across every connected device.

Basic filtering provides protection without any manual configuration, forming the foundation for a secure and distraction-free environment.

What Happens Automatically

Once your Scout router is online:

  • All DNS requests are automatically routed through Blackhole
  • Domains on threat-intelligence lists are blocked instantly
  • Safe traffic is allowed through to its destination
  • Users attempting to visit blocked domains are redirected or receive a browser-level block notice

This ensures every connected phone, laptop, or IoT device benefits from the same consistent protections even those without antivirus software or local filtering tools.

Categories Protected by Default

Scout’s base configuration automatically blocks:

  • Malicious and phishing domains
  • Ransomware and malware command-and-control (C2) infrastructure
  • Advertising and tracking networks
  • Adult, gambling, and other high-risk content
  • Shock or harmful imagery
  • Cryptocurrency scams and miners

These lists are curated and updated regularly, ensuring that protection evolves alongside emerging threats.

Administrator Role

For most environments, no action is required. However, administrators can:

  • Verify blocked activity through the Dashboard → Metrics section
  • Review and adjust content policies as the organization matures
  • Unblock legitimate domains if necessary

Encourage users to report false positives so the administrator can quickly review and adjust access rules.

Why It Matters

Level 1 filtering dramatically reduces exposure to threats by eliminating risky connections before they occur. It also supports a healthier digital environment for households and businesses by removing distractions and harmful content categories.

This automatic protection represents the Foundation 🟢 stage of the maturity journey providing peace of mind, simplicity, and a secure starting point for every Scout deployment.
